A small problem can grow into a big problem if you don’t address them quickly. This is especially true of plumbing which can cause disruption and require expensive repairs when things go wrong.

In this blog post, we’ll outline 3 ways to maintain and adopt good practices.

Leaky faucets

Dripping or leaky faucets can be caused by worn-out rubber washers. They are relatively easy to fix. But if left for too long they can cause water loss and high water bills. The fix is relatively easy; replacing a washer.

Leaky faucets can be fixed easily by removing the cap on the handle. Then using a screwdriver, remove the handle screw. After you remove the handle screw, you will need a wrench to unscrew the packing nut. The stem will be visible which you will need to remove as well. Finally, you will see the washer that is being held in place by a brass screw.

Clogged drains

Clogged drains can be caused by a mixture of hair, food, grease, soap and dirt. This culminates over time into a blockage and since the drain is always in use a small problem can become much more severe.

Some of the early signs to be aware of with clogged drains are slow drainage, an unpleasant smell and gurgling noises during drainage.

There are various ways to fix a clogged drain. Whichever method you choose, be aware that some treatments use harsh chemicals that can cause corrosion to the drain pipe.

A method that will cause a minimal amount of corrosion would be to use a mixture of salt and boiling water.  Pour 1/2 cup of salt followed by boiling water, and flush with boiling water constantly.

Leaking pipes

Leaking pipes may be caused by a couple of issues.

One of them could be because of the high pressure in your plumbing system. This places stress on the pipes causing them to leak.

The second type of leak can be caused if the pipe is damaged resulting in water loss. These types of leaks can cause dampness in areas that are not easily accessible and eventually encourage mould growth.

To address the high water pressure, you can contact a plumber who installs a device that will reduce the amount of pressure in your plumbing system.

A pipe leak (such as a pinhole leak) should be temporarily fixed but permanently fixed by a qualified plumber. A temporary fix will stop the leaking but relying on a temporary fix can lead to bigger problems since the leak may become more severe.

A temporary fix would be to use a rubber sealant that will stop the leaking. Another method of sealing the leak would be to use some soft plastic and a jubilee clamp. Place the plastic over the leak and tighten the clamp.

Why it pays to be proactive

Checking and regularly maintaining your plumbing is a good way to be proactive and prevent problems from increasing in severity, such as mould growth from occurring as well as saving your time on the disruption saved on repairs.
